Newcastle Upon Tyne is a city situated on the banks of the River Tyne in the North East region of England. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade and it later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the river, was amongst the worlds largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres.

The Newcastle of today is more widely reknowned as being a city which revolves heavily around business and culture, with a particular reputation for its nightlife.

Newcastle as a city is widely reknowned for its seven bridges that stretch the length of the river tyne, a river which flows through the heart of the city. These bridges are always and integral part of Newcastle's yearly bid for the United Kingdom's city of culture award and often attract tourists from all over the world.
